Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Sava

The Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Sava is one of Mitrovica’s most striking modern religious landmarks, built to honor Saint Sava, the first Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a symbol of learning, unity, and spiritual identity. Although construction began in the late 20th century, the church reflects centuries of architectural tradition, blending contemporary materials with classic Byzantine forms. Inside, the vast dome creates an uplifting sense of space. Light enters through high windows, illuminating the interior with a gentle, almost golden glow. The iconostasis is a centerpiece: a tall, intricately carved wooden screen filled with vivid icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Sava himself. Many icons are painted in a modern‑Byzantine style, giving the church a fresh yet deeply rooted aesthetic. One of the most interesting features is the ongoing interior decoration. Some frescoes remain in progress, allowing visitors to see the careful stages of traditional icon painting—sketches, underlayers, and final color work. This makes the church feel alive, continually shaped by the hands of contemporary artists.
