Vushtrri Castle is one of the city’s most atmospheric landmarks, a medieval fortress that reflects centuries of strategic importance. Although only parts of the original structure remain, the site still conveys the power once held by Vushtrri as a crossroads between major Balkan trade routes. Its thick stone walls and surviving towers hint at a defensive complex that protected merchants, caravans, and local rulers. Inside the castle grounds, visitors can explore open courtyards and restored sections that reveal layers of construction from different eras. One of the most interesting features is the blend of architectural influences—Ottoman repairs over medieval foundations, visible in the masonry patterns and arch shapes. These details make the castle a living record of the city’s shifting political and cultural landscape. A highlight is the central courtyard, where fragments of old stairways and wall bases show how the fortress was once organized. Location

Vushtrri Castle is right in the old center of Vushtrri, you really can't miss it. The address is usually given as in the historic core of Vushtrri, near Sheshi i Qytetit and Rruga Tirana, Vushtrri 42000. It sits among the old houses, so once you are in the main square you are already there. It is also known as the Old Fortress or Vojinović Tower, and it is the most recognizable landmark of the town. Because it is so central, everything else is within easy walking distance. Just a couple of minutes away you have the Vushtrri Museum at Lidhja e Lezhës, which shows the local archaeology and ethnology. Very close to the castle is the famous Stone Bridge, called Ura e Gurit or Vojinović Bridge, a beautiful nine-arched medieval bridge from the 14th century on the northwest side of the old town. Right around the castle you will also find the Old Hamam from the 16th century, the Gazi Ali Beg Mosque, the Church of St. John, and the old bazaar streets full of small shops and cafes. It is a compact area, perfect to explore slowly on foot.
