National Museum of Independence

National Museum of Independence in Vlorë is one of Albania’s most meaningful historic sites, preserving the building where the country’s independence was declared on 28 November 1912. Though modest in scale, it carries immense symbolic weight: this is where Ismail Qemali and the delegates raised the national flag, marking the birth of the Albanian state after centuries of Ottoman rule. The house itself reflects early‑20th‑century Vlorë architecture, with simple proportions and a quiet dignity that suits its role in national memory. Inside, the most compelling space is the original assembly room, arranged much as it was during the declaration. Visitors can see period furniture, early government documents, and portraits of the delegates who shaped Albania’s first political steps. A small collection of personal items belonging to Qemali adds an intimate dimension, revealing the daily life behind the historic moment. The museum also displays early versions of the Albanian flag, diplomatic correspondence, and photographs that trace how the new state sought international recognition. Despite its size, the museum offers a concentrated, powerful narrative of Albania’s emergence into modern nationhood.
