Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle is one of central Albania’s most atmospheric historic sites, a fortified enclave whose origins stretch back to Roman times. The present walls, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, still encircle a living neighbourhood, making it one of the few castles in the country where daily life continues inside the fortifications. Its thick stone ramparts and surviving towers offer a clear sense of how Elbasan once guarded the important Via Egnatia trade route. Inside the castle, visitors can explore narrow lanes lined with traditional houses, giving the site a uniquely inhabited character. One of the most interesting landmarks is the 15th‑century King Mosque, notable for its elegant minaret and carved wooden interior. Nearby stands the old Orthodox Church of St. Mary, where fragments of frescoes hint at centuries of worship. The castle also preserves remains of Roman walls and Ottoman‑era baths, revealing how different cultures shaped the city over time.
