Basilica of Bezistan

The Basilica of Bezistan is one of Elbasan’s most intriguing archaeological traces, a quiet fragment of early Christian life tucked within the modern city. Although only foundations and partial walls remain, the site reveals a basilica dating to late antiquity, likely the 5th or 6th century, when Elbasan—then Scampis—was an important Roman‑Byzantine settlement. Its location beside the later Ottoman bazaar (the Bezistan) creates a rare dialogue between two very different eras of urban history. Inside the excavated area, visitors can identify the basilica’s three‑aisled plan. The central nave is outlined by sturdy stone blocks, while the side aisles show narrower passages where worshippers once gathered. One of the most interesting details is the preserved mosaic fragments: small pieces of colored stone and glass that hint at geometric patterns typical of early Christian art. Even in their incomplete state, they offer a glimpse of the building’s former elegance. Another highlight is the apse zone, where archaeologists uncovered traces of the altar platform. Its orientation toward the east follows the traditional symbolism of light and resurrection.
