Bourtzi Fortress rises from the centre of Nafplio’s harbour like a stone crown floating on the water. Built by the Venetians in 1473, it was designed to guard the city from pirate raids and naval attacks. Its compact layout—essentially a fortified islet—made it a perfect maritime checkpoint, controlling every ship entering the bay. During the Greek War of Independence, Bourtzi served as a refuge for local leaders, and later, in the 20th century, it briefly operated as a hotel, giving guests the unusual experience of sleeping inside a medieval sea fort. Inside, visitors can explore the central tower, narrow stairways, and small chambers once used by soldiers. The gun positions still face the harbour, offering a sense of how the fortress defended Nafplio for centuries. The courtyard, open to the sea breeze, provides one of the most atmospheric viewpoints in the city, especially at sunset when the stone walls glow gold. Although the interior is modest compared to larger fortresses, its charm lies in its isolation and maritime character. Reaching Bourtzi by boat adds to the experience, making it feel like a tiny world of its own.
Nafplio Greece
Bourtzi Fortress sits on a small islet right in the middle of Nafplio’s harbour in the Peloponnese region of Greece. The official address is simply Nafplion, 211 00, Nafplio, since it’s an island fortress just a short boat ride from the waterfront. You reach it by taking one of the little boats that leave regularly from the pier near Filellinon Square. The crossing takes only a few minutes and drops you right at the entrance of this compact Venetian castle that once guarded the port. From the waterfront you already have clear views of the fortress, and once you’re back on shore you’re right in the heart of the old town. Just a short walk away you’ll find the Archaeological Museum and the War Museum. Looking up from the harbour you can see both Akronafplia Castle on the rocky peninsula and the much larger Palamidi Fortress higher on the hill. The seaside promenade is lined with cafés, and a little further along sits Arvanitia Beach if you fancy a swim.
