Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life

Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life is one of Devon’s most engaging local museums, offering an unexpectedly rich journey through centuries of rural, industrial and domestic history. Founded in 1960, it has grown into a sprawling collection housed in a former National School building, where every room reveals a different facet of Mid Devon’s past. The museum’s star attraction is the Tivvy Bumper, a beautifully restored steam locomotive that once ran on the Exe Valley line. Its presence gives the museum a distinctive character and anchors its strong transport collection, which also includes bicycles, horse‑drawn vehicles and early motoring artefacts. Inside the galleries, visitors encounter everything from lace‑making tools—reflecting Tiverton’s famous lace industry—to agricultural machinery that shaped the region’s farming life. Domestic history is vividly presented through recreated Victorian rooms, wartime displays and collections of toys, costumes and household objects.
