Lyme Regis Museum is one of Dorset’s most vibrant small museums, perched above the seafront on the site of Mary Anning’s childhood home. Its location alone makes it special: from here, Anning began the fossil‑hunting career that transformed science, discovering ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and the first correctly identified pterosaur in Britain. The museum celebrates her legacy with engaging displays, original artefacts, and stories that bring her world to life. Inside, the Geology Gallery showcases spectacular Jurassic Coast fossils, from ammonites and crinoids to large marine reptiles. Interactive exhibits explain how the coastline formed and why Lyme Regis became a global centre for palaeontology. The Mary Anning displays include personal items, letters, and models that trace her groundbreaking work and the challenges she faced as a woman in early 19th‑century science. The museum also explores Lyme’s rich social and maritime history. The Local History Gallery features objects from the town’s shipbuilding, lace‑making, and seaside heritage, while the Art Gallery displays paintings and illustrations inspired by the dramatic coastline.

Lyme Regis Museum sits right on the seafront in the heart of Lyme Regis, built directly on the site of the home of famous nineteenth-century fossil hunter Mary Anning. Housed in a striking Grade II listed Victorian building, the museum showcases the region's world-renowned Jurassic Coast heritage, packed with prehistoric fossils, maritime displays, local art, and historic literary connections. The picturesque coastal town and surrounding region feature an incredible selection of historic landmarks and cultural attractions within a short stroll or drive. Just down the road, you can explore the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, a private collection housing over twelve thousand specimens. Following the nearby river path brings you to The Town Mill, a beautifully restored fourteenth-century working watermill surrounded by artisan workshops, galleries, and a microbrewery. Walking along the seafront leads directly to The Cobb, Lyme Regis's iconic medieval stone harbour wall made famous by classic literature and cinema, where you will also find the small Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. A short drive east into the rolling countryside takes you toward the sweeping ruins of Forde Abbey and Gardens, a historic Cistercian monastery transformed into a grand private country home, as well as the dramatic coastal cliffs of Golden Cap, the highest point along the south coast of England.
