Inside, you’ll find exhibits exploring Rye’s role as a Cinque Port, its battles with French raiders and the dramatic coastal changes that reshaped the landscape. The centre also highlights Rye’s long tradition of craftsmanship, with displays on local trades and maritime life. A section dedicated to smuggling history reveals the covert networks that once operated through the town’s narrow streets, complete with tools, stories and atmospheric reconstructions. Rye Heritage Centre sits on the quayside in the historic town of Rye, East Sussex. You’ll find it at The Old Sail Loft, Strand Quay, Rye, TN31 7AY, right at the bottom of Mermaid Street by the old harbour. Housed in a converted 19th-century sail loft, the centre is home to the famous Rye Town Model, a detailed scale model of Victorian Rye that comes alive with sound and light to tell the town’s long story of seafaring, smuggling and survival. There are also exhibitions and displays that bring the past to life in a relaxed way. A short walk uphill takes you into the heart of the medieval streets and to the Ypres Tower, part of Rye Castle Museum, with its views over the marshes. Nearby is Lamb House, the elegant former home of writers, and the ancient St Mary’s Church where you can climb the tower for wider panoramas. Mermaid Street itself is just steps away with its cobbles and old inns, and the rest of the compact old town with its independent shops and galleries is easy to explore on foot. Everything sits close together so you can start at the quayside and wander up into the historic lanes without covering much ground.
