Brede Steam Giants

Brede Steam Giants is one of East Sussex’s most impressive industrial heritage sites, hidden in the countryside yet filled with monumental engineering. The name refers to the massive triple‑expansion steam pumping engines that once powered the water supply for Hastings. Built in the early 20th century, these giants were designed to run continuously and reliably, and their scale is astonishing: towering beams, polished brass fittings and vast flywheels that demonstrate the power of steam at its peak. Inside, visitors can explore the No. 1 and No. 2 engines, both restored to working condition by dedicated volunteers. Seeing them operate is the highlight of any visit—the rhythmic movement, the hiss of steam and the sheer mechanical elegance make it feel like stepping into a living time capsule. The site also includes diesel engines, smaller pumps and original workshop tools that show how the facility evolved over decades.
