Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle is one of Gloucestershire’s most elegant historic estates, distinguished by its royal connections and its rare status as the burial place of Queen Katherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII. Set against the Cotswold hills, the castle has been destroyed, rebuilt and transformed across the centuries, giving it a layered character that blends medieval fortification with Victorian romance. Inside, the castle’s rooms form a curated journey through English history. The Katherine Parr Exhibition is a highlight, displaying her books, letters and personal items that reveal her intellect and influence during the Tudor era. The Long Room and Morning Room showcase fine art, family portraits and richly furnished interiors created by the Dent family, who restored Sudeley in the 19th century. The Stuart Room holds artefacts linked to Charles I, who sought refuge at the castle during the Civil War. The Banqueting Hall, roofless since the 1640s, is one of the most atmospheric spaces, its stone arches framing views of the gardens. Just beyond lies St Mary’s Chapel, where Katherine Parr’s tomb rests beneath delicate stained glass.
