Chedworth Roman Villa

Chedworth Roman Villa is one of Britain’s most impressive Roman sites, hidden in a quiet Cotswold valley yet once part of a vast and luxurious countryside estate. Its most striking fact is the scale of its survival: more than 35 rooms, intricate mosaics and advanced heating systems remain visible, offering a vivid picture of elite Roman life nearly 1,700 years ago. The villa’s owners were clearly wealthy, with evidence of fine dining, private bathing and sophisticated engineering. Inside, visitors can walk along raised walkways that overlook beautifully preserved mosaic floors, including geometric designs and colourful panels that once decorated reception rooms. The hypocaust system—a network of underfloor heating channels—shows how Romans warmed their rooms using furnaces and circulating hot air. The bathhouse complex is a highlight, with cold, warm and hot rooms that reveal the ritual of Roman bathing. The museum displays artefacts found on site, from jewellery and pottery to tools and carved stonework, helping to reconstruct daily life in the villa. A reconstructed Roman dining room adds an immersive touch, showing how guests might have reclined during meals.
