Dr Jenner’s House in Berkeley is one of Gloucestershire’s most significant historic sites, preserving the home and garden where Edward Jenner pioneered the world’s first successful vaccination. It was here, in 1796, that Jenner carried out his famous smallpox experiment using cowpox, a breakthrough that eventually led to the eradication of one of history’s deadliest diseases. The house offers an unusually intimate look at the life of a scientist whose work changed global health. Inside, visitors can explore Jenner’s study, still arranged with period furniture and medical instruments that evoke the moment of discovery. His original vaccination equipment, letters and case notes reveal how he developed and defended his ideas at a time when many doubted them. The Old Surgery, preserved exactly as it was used, provides a striking insight into early medical practice. One of the most charming features is the Temple of Vaccinia, a small rustic hut in the garden where Jenner vaccinated local villagers free of charge. The grounds also include heritage plants and quiet corners that reflect Jenner’s love of nature and his work as a naturalist.
