Berkeley Castle

Berkeley Castle is one of Britain’s most atmospheric medieval strongholds, continuously lived in by the Berkeley family for more than 850 years. Built in the 12th century to secure Norman control over the Severn Valley, it later became infamous as the place where King Edward II met his mysterious and controversial death in 1327. The castle’s warm pink stone, irregular towers and deeply worn stairways give it a uniquely intimate character, more like a fortified home than a military fortress. Inside, the Great Hall sets the tone with armour, tapestries and portraits tracing the family’s long lineage. The King’s Chamber, traditionally associated with Edward II’s imprisonment, is one of the most evocative rooms, its thick walls and low light preserving a sense of medieval tension. The Drawing Room and Morning Room reveal later Georgian and Victorian tastes, filled with fine furniture, delicate needlework and personal collections that show how the castle evolved into a comfortable aristocratic residence. The Old Kitchen is a highlight, with vast fireplaces, original utensils and centuries‑old cooking equipment. The Treasury holds charters, documents and artefacts that chart the castle’s administrative role through the ages.
