Calshot Castle

Calshot Castle stands guard at the mouth of Southampton Water, a compact yet fascinating Tudor fort built by Henry VIII in the 1540s. Its circular design, thick stone walls and commanding views made it a key part of the king’s coastal defence network. Over the centuries, the castle adapted to new military needs, later serving as a base for seaplanes and flying boats, giving it an unusually varied history for such a small structure. Inside, visitors can explore the central keep, where gun ports, vaulted rooms and narrow stairways reveal the fort’s original defensive purpose. Exhibits explain how Calshot protected the Solent from foreign fleets and how its strategic position allowed rapid communication along the coast. The upper floors offer panoramic views across the water, once used to spot approaching ships and now perfect for watching modern maritime traffic. One of the most interesting chapters of the castle’s story is its 20th‑century role as part of RAF Calshot. Displays include photographs, uniforms and equipment from the era when flying boats operated from the nearby slipways, connecting Britain to distant parts of the empire.
