Palace House is right in the heart of the Beaulieu Estate in the New Forest, Hampshire. It feels very tucked away, surrounded by forest and close to the Beaulieu River, but it is easy to get to from Brockenhurst and Lymington. The official address is Palace House, Beaulieu, New Forest, Hampshire SO42 7ZN. It is the family home of the Montagu family since 1538 and started life as the gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. Today it is part of the Beaulieu visitor attraction. You do not just get the house itself. Right next door on the same ticket you have the National Motor Museum, one of the best car museums in the UK with over 285 vehicles, plus the World of Top Gear, the ruins and church of Beaulieu Abbey, and the pretty gardens. Just down the road is Buckler's Hard, the old 18th century shipbuilding village on the river bank, with its own maritime museum and little cottages to wander around. If you stay in the New Forest you are also close to Hurst Castle out on the spit near Milford on Sea, and a bit further along the coast is the historic dockyard at Portsmouth with HMS Victory. It is a perfect base for mixing a stately home with museums, old castles and the forest itself.
