National Motor Museum
The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu is one of Hampshire’s most distinctive attractions, offering a sweeping journey through more than a century of motoring history. Set within the Beaulieu Estate, the museum houses over 280 vehicles, from pioneering Victorian motor‑carriages to sleek modern supercars, all displayed with a strong sense of storytelling and innovation. One of its most captivating features is the collection of early racing machines, including land‑speed record breakers such as Bluebird, driven by Sir Malcolm Campbell. These dramatic vehicles, with their streamlined bodies and experimental engineering, capture the daring spirit of early motorsport. The museum also showcases rare family cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles that shaped everyday British life. Inside, visitors can explore themed galleries on design, technology and social change. The “World of Top Gear” exhibition is a favourite, featuring challenge cars and props from the television series. Another highlight is the reconstructed 1930s garage, complete with tools, signage and period atmosphere.

It is set within the beautiful Beaulieu estate, between Southampton and Lymington, and is easy to find following brown signs from the M27. The museum itself is part of a much bigger day out. On the same estate you can visit Palace House, home to the Montagu family since the 1500s, the 13th century Beaulieu Abbey, once home to Cistercian monks, and the Secret Army Exhibition about wartime special operations. There is also a monorail, veteran bus rides and lovely gardens. Nearby you have Buckler's Hard, the historic shipbuilding village on the Beaulieu River where ships for Nelson's fleet were built, now with a maritime museum. The New Forest itself is right around you, with its free roaming ponies, walking and cycling trails. A short drive takes you to Lymington with its harbour, St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, and to Exbury Gardens, a famous woodland garden. Southampton with SeaCity Museum and Solent Sky Museum, and Portsmouth with its Historic Dockyard, are also not far, so it fits perfectly into a tour of Hampshire's coast and countryside.
