Jane Austen's House is in the pretty little village of Chawton near Alton in Hampshire. The address is Jane Austen's House Museum, Winchester Road, Chawton, Alton, Hampshire GU34 1SD, England. It is the 17th-century cottage where Jane Austen lived for the last eight years of her life and where she wrote and revised all of her famous novels. The location is lovely and quiet, right in the heart of the South Downs area, and there is a lot to see close by. Just a short walk up the lane you will find Chawton House, the grand Elizabethan manor that once belonged to Jane's brother Edward Austen Knight. It is now a library and museum with beautiful gardens. In the village itself you can visit St Nicholas Church where Jane worshipped and where her mother and sister are buried. In the nearby market town of Alton you have the Curtis Museum and the Allen Gallery, both small local history museums, and just outside Alton there is Gilbert White's House and Gardens in Selborne, a lovely historic house museum. If you want to go a bit further, Winchester is only about half an hour away, where you can see Winchester Cathedral and Jane Austen's final resting place, as well as the Great Hall with King Arthur's Round Table.
