Hellens Manor

Hellens Manor, near Much Marcle, is one of Herefordshire’s most atmospheric and characterful historic houses—a lived‑in Tudor and Jacobean manor filled with stories, eccentricities and remarkable artefacts. With origins stretching back to the 12th century, it has been shaped by centuries of influential families, including the Walwyns and the powerful Blackfriars, giving the house a rich tapestry of political and personal history. Inside, the Great Hall sets the tone with its timbered roof, vast fireplace and portraits that trace the manor’s lineage. The Stone Hall and Dining Room reveal layers of Tudor and Stuart craftsmanship, from oak panelling to carved furniture. One of the most intriguing rooms is the Music Room, home to a rare 17th‑century virginal and atmospheric tapestries. The Bloody Room, linked to the tragic story of Hetty Walwyn, adds a touch of legend to the visit. Hellens also holds exceptional artefacts: a letter from Anne Boleyn, personal belongings of Mary Tudor, and Civil War relics that anchor the house firmly in national history. Outside, the gardens are a highlight—formal borders, a physic garden, ancient yews and a peaceful duck pond. The walled garden and orchard reflect centuries of estate life, while sculptures and quiet corners create a contemplative atmosphere.
