Museum of Cider

The Museum of Cider in Hereford is one of the county’s most distinctive heritage attractions, celebrating centuries of orchard culture, traditional craft and industrial innovation. Housed in the former Bulmer’s headquarters, the museum traces the story of cider‑making from medieval farmsteads to the rise of one of Britain’s most famous drinks. Inside, visitors can explore an impressive collection of historic cider presses, including massive 18th‑ and 19th‑century machines that once powered rural production. The stone mills and wooden screw presses reveal the physical labour behind early cider‑making, while displays of tools, barrels and bottling equipment show how techniques evolved over time. A highlight is the Bulmer’s archive, which includes advertising artwork, early bottles, company records and memorabilia from the brand’s global expansion. The museum also holds rare pomological collections, with beautifully illustrated apple and pear varieties that chart the region’s orchard heritage. The orchard room explores Herefordshire’s landscape, its traditional apple varieties and the social history of cider—from farmworkers’ rations to Victorian temperance debates.
