Violette Szabo GC Museum
The Violette Szabo GC Museum in Herefordshire is a deeply moving tribute to one of Britain’s most remarkable wartime heroines. Set in a modest cottage at Wormelow, it preserves the story of Violette Szabo, the Special Operations Executive agent who undertook two missions in occupied France and was posthumously awarded the George Cross for her courage. Inside, visitors encounter an intimate collection of personal objects that bring her story close. Her clothing, letters, photographs, and childhood belongings reveal the human side of a figure often remembered only for her bravery. A highlight is the display on her SOE training, featuring items linked to the covert techniques she learned—coding, sabotage, and survival skills that defined the secret war. The museum also explores her final mission in 1944, when she was captured after a fierce firefight. The Violette Szabo GC Museum is in a quiet corner of south Herefordshire, not far from the Welsh border. You will find it at Cartref, Tump Lane, Wormelow, Hereford HR2 8HN, just off the A466 between Hereford and Monmouth. It is set in the grounds of the little house called Cartref where Violette Szabo spent much of her childhood and stayed between her secret missions during World War Two. Her aunt turned the house into a museum in memory of her, and it is open seasonally, usually on Wednesdays. Nearby you have Goodrich Castle, one of the finest medieval castle ruins in Herefordshire with great views over the Wye Valley, and Skenfrith, White Castle and Grosmont, the Three Castles that guard the border. The village of Much Birch and Much Marcle are close by for walks. Hereford city is only about 20 minutes north, where you can visit Hereford Cathedral to see the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, the Black and White House Museum in High Town, the Museum of Cider and the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery. If you head south you are straight into the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, with Symonds Yat, Monmouth and Tintern Abbey an easy drive away.
