Knebworth House
Knebworth House in Hertfordshire is one of England’s most recognisable country estates, famed for its dramatic Gothic Revival façade and its long association with the Lytton family, who have lived here since the 15th century. The house’s turrets, battlements, and sculpted chimneys give it a romantic, almost theatrical presence, yet its interiors reveal a rich blend of literary, political, and artistic history. Inside, visitors can explore the Library, once the working room of novelist and statesman Edward Bulwer‑Lytton, author of The Last Days of Pompeii. His desk, manuscripts, and personal objects offer a glimpse into the life of a Victorian celebrity whose phrases—such as “the pen is mightier than the sword”—entered everyday language. The Dining Parlour and Drawing Room showcase ornate plaster ceilings, family portraits, and collections of fine furniture accumulated over centuries. One of the most intriguing rooms is the Edwardian Study, preserved much as it was in the early 20th century, with photographs, travel souvenirs, and correspondence that trace the family’s global connections. The house also displays memorabilia from Knebworth’s legendary rock concerts, which brought world‑famous performers to the estate from the 1970s onward.

Knebworth House is just south of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, on the edge of the village of Old Knebworth. You will find it at Knebworth Park, Old Knebworth Lane, Knebworth SG3 6PY. It sits right off junction 7 of the A1(M), about 30 miles north of London, and has been the home of the Lytton family since 1490. The house you see today is famous for its gothic towers and sprawling park. Inside the estate itself you have the formal gardens, a maze, adventure playground and dinosaur trail that are great for families. Very close by is Knebworth village with its old cottages and St Martin's Church where many Lyttons are buried. A short drive brings you to Hatfield House, another great Jacobean palace where Elizabeth I once lived, and to Stevenage Old Town with its museum. If you like history, you have Verulamium Museum and the Roman city walls in St Albans, St Albans Cathedral, and the de Havilland Aircraft Museum at Salisbury Hall. For stately homes, you have Woburn Abbey and Wrest Park within easy reach, and for a day out with kids, Paradise Wildlife Park and Willows Activity Farm are nearby.
