North Hertfordshire Museum is in the historic market town of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. You will find it at 14 Brand Street, Hitchin SG5 1JE, right in the town centre next to Hitchin Market Square. It is housed in the old Town Hall and Hitchin Museum combined, with galleries on local history, football, natural history and art. Right outside you have Hitchin Market, one of the oldest markets in Hertfordshire, plus St Mary's Church, the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, and the pretty streets of Hitchin with independent shops and cafes by the River Hiz. A short walk brings you to the British Schools Museum at 41 Queen Street, the world's only surviving complete Victorian and Georgian schoolrooms. Very close by you have Hitchin Lavender fields in summer, and Letchworth Garden City, the world's first garden city, with Broadway Gardens and Letchworth Museum. A short drive brings you to a lot of history. You have Knebworth House at Old Knebworth Lane SG3 6PY with its gothic towers and park, Hatfield House, and Berkhamsted Castle ruins at White Hill. For bigger days out, you have Shaw's Corner at Ayot St Lawrence, the home of George Bernard Shaw, Wrest Park and Woburn Abbey nearby, and St Albans with Verulamium Museum and St Albans Cathedral within half an hour.
