Sir Max Aitken Museum

Sir Max Aitken Museum is one of Cowes’ most distinctive cultural treasures, housed in the beautifully restored Building No. 2 of the former Royal Yacht Squadron. Created by Sir Max Aitken—wartime fighter pilot, newspaper magnate and passionate yachtsman—the museum reflects his lifelong fascination with maritime history and craftsmanship. Its intimate scale makes every object feel personal, almost as if you’ve stepped into a private collector’s gallery overlooking the Solent. Inside, visitors will find an eclectic and elegant collection of nautical artefacts. The highlights include finely carved ship figureheads, intricate model yachts, and historic maritime paintings that trace Britain’s naval traditions. One particularly charming feature is the display of silver yachting trophies, many linked to Cowes’ famous regattas, offering a glimpse into the competitive world Sir Max himself adored.
