Belvoir Castle rises above the Vale of Belvoir like a theatrical set piece, a Regency‑era fantasy rebuilt in the early 1800s after earlier medieval fortifications fell into ruin. Seat of the Dukes of Rutland for nearly a thousand years, it has been destroyed and rebuilt four times, each reconstruction adding new layers of aristocratic ambition. Its name comes from Norman French for “beautiful view,” though locals long pronounced it “Beaver,” a quirk that survived centuries. Inside, the castle feels more like a palace than a fortress. The State Rooms showcase lavish décor, including the Elizabeth Saloon with its gilded detailing and portraits of the Manners family. The Regency Library is a highlight, lined with thousands of volumes and opening onto sweeping valley views. The Guard Room displays historic arms and armour, while the Ballroom—a masterpiece of symmetry and light—hosts concerts and seasonal events. Visitors also enjoy the Art Gallery, featuring works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Poussin.

It’s only about six or seven miles west of the market town of Grantham and roughly ten to twelve miles northeast of Melton Mowbray, so it’s easy to reach if you’re exploring the East Midlands. The castle itself is the big draw, of course, with its grand rooms and gardens, but the area around it has plenty more to keep you busy. Just a short drive away is Belton House, a fine National Trust property with elegant rooms and parkland. A little further on you’ll find Woolsthorpe Manor, the childhood home of Sir Isaac Newton, where you can still see the famous apple tree. Grantham itself has a pleasant high street, historic churches and a few small museums if you fancy a wander. Melton Mowbray is well known for its pork pies and Stilton cheese, and makes a nice stop for a bite. If you want something more outdoor-focused, Rutland Water is within easy reach for walks or a bit of time by the water, and Easton Walled Gardens offer a peaceful spot to stroll among flowers and old walls.
