Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre
The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby is one of Britain’s most evocative wartime museums, built on the former RAF bomber base where Lancaster crews once trained. Founded by the Panton brothers in memory of their sibling Christopher, who was lost on a 1944 mission, the centre preserves the atmosphere of a working airfield from the Second World War. Its star attraction is Avro Lancaster NX611 “Just Jane”, one of only a handful of Lancasters still capable of taxiing. Visitors can watch the aircraft thunder down the runway or book a cockpit experience to sit where wartime crews once flew. The museum also houses a rare Dakota, original control tower, and a recreated WWII hangar filled with engines, uniforms, and personal artefacts that reveal the daily life of Bomber Command. A poignant highlight is the Memorial Garden, honouring the thousands of airmen who never returned. The centre’s mix of heavy engineering, human stories, and living history makes it one of the most atmospheric aviation museums in the UK.
