Williamson Art Gallery & Museum, opened in 1928, is one of Merseyside’s most elegant cultural spaces, designed with soft natural light and wide galleries that make viewing art feel calm and intimate. Built through the generosity of the Williamson family, prominent Birkenhead shipowners, it remains a cornerstone of Wirral’s artistic life. Inside, the museum is best known for its exceptional collection of Della Robbia pottery, a vibrant local craft movement that flourished in Birkenhead at the turn of the 20th century. These richly glazed ceramics—tiles, plaques, vases and architectural pieces—showcase bold colours and Arts and Crafts ideals. The gallery also holds fine Victorian and early 20th‑century paintings, including maritime scenes that reflect the region’s shipbuilding heritage. The ship models are a highlight: meticulously crafted vessels that trace Wirral’s industrial and naval history.
