Birkenhead Priory Museum

Birkenhead Priory Museum, set above the Mersey with views toward Liverpool’s skyline, is the oldest standing building on Merseyside and one of its most atmospheric historic sites. Founded in the 1150s by Benedictine monks, the priory once served travellers crossing the river and later became closely tied to Birkenhead’s shipbuilding heritage. Its survival through centuries of conflict, industrialisation and wartime bombing makes it a rare witness to the region’s long story. Inside, visitors can explore the Chapter House, a beautifully restored medieval space now used for exhibitions and concerts. Its stone arches and quiet acoustics preserve the contemplative character of monastic life. The Undercroft, with its thick walls and vaulted ceiling, is one of the priory’s most evocative areas, offering a glimpse into 12th‑century craftsmanship. A highlight is St Mary’s Tower, rebuilt in the 19th century and now open to climb. From the top, you can see the historic Cammell Laird shipyards, the docks and the sweep of the Mersey—an unforgettable panorama linking the priory’s medieval origins to Merseyside’s industrial past. Displays throughout the museum explore the priory’s role in river crossings, its dissolution under Henry VIII and its later use as a parish church.
