Rievaulx Terrace
Rievaulx Terrace is one of North Yorkshire’s most enchanting 18th‑century landscape creations, designed as a dramatic viewing platform above the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Commissioned by Thomas Duncombe II around 1758, it reflects the era’s fascination with picturesque scenery: the terrace frames the abbey like a living painting, revealing shifting perspectives as you walk its gentle curve. Two remarkable follies anchor the experience. The Ionic Temple, inspired by classical antiquity, was once used for elegant dining and social gatherings. Inside, it features ornate plasterwork, rich colours, and period furnishings that recreate the refined atmosphere of Georgian leisure. At the opposite end stands the Tuscan Temple, simpler in style but equally striking, offering a contrasting architectural mood and superb views across the valley. The walk between the temples is lined with ancient trees, wildflowers, and carefully managed grassland, creating a serene blend of nature and design. Interpretive displays explain how the terrace was engineered to heighten drama—every bend reveals a new composition, with the abbey appearing and disappearing between the trees.
