The Canal Museum

The Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne is one of Northamptonshire’s most engaging heritage sites, offering a vivid look at the life, labour and engineering behind Britain’s historic waterways. Set beside the Grand Union Canal, the museum occupies a former corn mill and preserves stories that shaped both local industry and national transport. Inside, visitors can explore detailed displays on canal construction, including tools, maps and models that explain how locks, tunnels and aqueducts were built. The working models of narrowboats are particularly striking, showing how families lived aboard in compact cabins decorated with traditional “Roses and Castles” folk art. Personal diaries, photographs and trade records reveal the daily routines of boatmen, from long-haul cargo journeys to the tight-knit communities that grew along the towpaths. One of the most intriguing exhibits focuses on the Blisworth Tunnel, one of the longest navigable tunnels in England, with artefacts and stories illustrating the challenges of its construction. The museum also houses beautifully restored canal memorabilia, from painted water cans to horse harnesses used before motorised boats became common.
