Chillingham Castle

Chillingham is also famous for its more unusual collections: cabinets of curios, preserved letters, archaeological finds and eclectic artefacts that reflect the castle’s idiosyncratic charm. The dungeons and torture chamber, stark and atmospheric, offer insight into the harsher side of border warfare. Outside, the grounds add another layer of interest.

Chillingham Castle is tucked away in the quiet countryside of Northumberland, just outside the village of Chillingham itself. You will find it at Chillingham Castle, Chillingham, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 5NJ, United Kingdom, about halfway between Alnwick and Wooler. It is a 13th-century medieval fortress and is famous as one of the most haunted castles in England. Inside you can explore the Great Hall, State Rooms, dungeons and torture chamber, and outside there is a large enclosed park that is home to the rare white Chillingham Wild Cattle, a herd that has lived here for hundreds of years. You are in a lovely rural spot but close to a lot of great places. Right next to the castle estate you can visit the Wild Cattle themselves. Just a short drive away is Chillingham village and Chatton, and the market town of Wooler, which is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills. For other castles and history, Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden are about twenty minutes away, famous for Harry Potter and the Poison Garden. Bamburgh Castle perched right on the beach, Dunstanburgh Castle ruins, Warkworth Castle on the River Coquet and Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island are all easy day trips along the stunning Northumberland coast.
