Bailiffgate Museum
Bailiffgate Museum, set in a former church just below Alnwick Castle, is one of Northumberland’s most engaging community museums. Its strength lies in how vividly it tells the story of local life, weaving together archaeology, industry, childhood, wartime memories and the region’s deep connection to the landscape. Rather than focusing on a single era, the museum presents a layered narrative that feels personal and immersive. Inside, one of the most striking displays is the Iron Age and Roman collection, featuring local finds that reveal how the area developed long before Alnwick’s medieval grandeur. The Victorian street scene is a visitor favourite, recreating shops and domestic interiors that show how families lived, worked and socialised. The schoolroom, complete with desks and slates, offers a nostalgic look at early education. A powerful section explores coal mining, once central to Northumberland’s identity. Tools, uniforms and oral histories bring the miners’ world to life. The museum also holds poignant First World War and Second World War exhibits, including personal letters and objects that highlight the impact of conflict on local communities.

You will find it at 14 Bailiffgate, Alnwick, Northumberland NE66 1LX. It is housed in a former church right opposite the entrance to Alnwick Castle, at the top of town near the old town walls. You literally cross the street from the castle gates and you are there. It is known as the people's museum for Alnwick and North Northumberland, with local stories, farming and mining objects, old photos and lots of interactive bits for kids. Directly opposite is Alnwick Castle itself, one of the largest inhabited castles in England and famous for its Harry Potter filming and State Rooms. Inside the castle grounds you also get the Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland for free with your castle ticket. Just around the corner is The Alnwick Garden with its famous Poison Garden, water features and Lilidorei play village. Alnwick town is full of character too. You have Alnwick Playhouse for theatre and cinema, Barter Books in the old station which is a must for book lovers, and the little House of Hardy Fishing Tackle Museum on Bondgate. If you want to go further, you are only a short drive from Alnmouth Beach, Warkworth Castle and Hermitage, Edlingham Castle, and the coastal castles like Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh. It makes a perfect stop while you are exploring the castle.
