It is one of the most famous castles in England, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland for around 700 years, and you might recognise it from the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey. Inside you get grand State Rooms, medieval history and lots of fun events like broomstick training for kids. What makes Alnwick so great is that you have so much right next door. Directly next to the castle is The Alnwick Garden, a stunning contemporary garden with its famous Poison Garden, grand cascade and Treehouse restaurant. Just a short walk into town is Bailiffgate Museum and Gallery, which tells the story of Alnwick and the area. You are also right on the edge of the beautiful Northumberland coast. Within a few miles you can visit Warkworth Castle, another mighty medieval fortress overlooking the River Coquet, and Dunstanburgh Castle ruins on the coastline. Bamburgh Castle, perched right on the beach, and Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle are easy day trips.
