The Harley Gallery
Set within the historic Welbeck Estate in Sherwood Forest, The Harley Gallery offers a vibrant blend of contemporary art and centuries-old heritage. Founded by Ivy, Duchess of Portland, the gallery sits alongside the magnificent Portland Collection, preserving one of Britain’s finest private art accumulations amassed over 400 years by the Dukes of Portland. The building itself holds a remarkable past. Constructed in 1860 by the eccentric 5th Duke of Portland—famous for building miles of secret underground tunnels—it originally served as the estate’s private gasworks. Converted into an award-winning art venue in 1994, subtle industrial details like thick masonry walls and generous spans remain visible within its airy, light-filled spaces. Inside, two main gallery spaces present changing exhibitions of contemporary art, showcasing everything from fine paintings and sculptures to jewel-like glass and contemporary crafts. Adjacent to the main rooms, visitors can explore the museum displaying The Portland Collection. Here, world-class historic treasures await, including a drawing by Michelangelo, regal portraits by Anthony van Dyck, and the famous pearl earring worn by King Charles I during his execution in 1649.

You will find it at The Harley Gallery, Welbeck, Worksop, Nottinghamshire S80 3LW, just off the A60 Mansfield Road. It sits inside the estate courtyard, so it feels very rural and peaceful, surrounded by Sherwood Forest countryside, but it is still easy to reach from Worksop and Mansfield. What makes the location so good is how much else is right on your doorstep. You don't even have to leave the estate to keep exploring. Right next to the gallery is The Portland Collection, a wonderful museum that holds treasures gathered by the Dukes of Portland over centuries, and Welbeck Abbey itself, the old ducal seat which opens for special tours in summer. The Welbeck Farm Shop and the School of Artisan Food are also just there in the courtyard. A short drive away you have got plenty of classic days out. Clumber Park, a big National Trust parkland with a lake and woods, is about ten minutes away. You are also right on the edge of Sherwood Forest and the famous Major Oak. If you like history, Rufford Abbey Country Park, Bolsover Castle and the little time-capsule Mr Straw's House in Worksop are all very close and easy to combine into a full day around the gallery.
