Yet behind its polished façade lies a story of extravagance: the 5th Lord Berwick famously overspent on art, fashion and lavish entertaining, nearly bankrupting the estate. Inside, the house offers a rich sequence of rooms. The Picture Gallery, with its dramatic curved ceiling, showcases the Berwicks’ taste for European art. The Octagon Room, once used for music and conversation, remains one of the most atmospheric spaces. The dining room and drawing rooms reveal how the family balanced ceremony with comfort, while the servants’ quarters provide a fascinating contrast—long corridors, functional workspaces and glimpses of daily labour that kept the household running. One of Attingham’s most intriguing features is the vast Regency-era Boudoir, decorated in bold colours and patterns that feel surprisingly modern. The estate also houses a rare surviving Nash-designed conservatory, adding to its architectural significance.
