Montacute House

Montacute House is one of Somerset’s finest Elizabethan mansions, a glowing masterpiece of golden Ham Hill stone completed in 1601 for Sir Edward Phelips, the lawyer who opened the prosecution against Guy Fawkes. Its long, symmetrical façade and towering windows make it one of the best‑preserved examples of Renaissance architecture in England. Inside, the house offers an exceptional sequence of period rooms. The Great Hall sets the tone with its heraldic glass and carved screen, while the Long Gallery — stretching an extraordinary 172 feet — is one of the longest surviving in England. Today it displays portraits from the National Portrait Gallery, turning the space into a walk through British history.
