Hestercombe House

Hestercombe House is one of Somerset’s most rewarding historic estates, celebrated for its rare combination of Georgian architecture and world‑class garden design. The house itself, remodelled in the 18th century, offers elegant interiors with clean lines, tall sash windows and a calm, classical atmosphere. Though not heavily furnished, its rooms reveal the estate’s long evolution and the families who shaped it. The true highlight is the trio of gardens spanning three centuries. The Georgian Landscape Garden unfolds with sweeping vistas, serpentine lakes and carefully framed views that reflect the ideals of William Kent and Coplestone Warre Bampfylde. It feels theatrical, with temples, cascades and winding paths designed to surprise visitors at every turn. Closer to the house lies the famous Edwardian Garden, created by Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens. Their collaboration produced one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts garden design: stone‑paved terraces, rills, herbaceous borders and precise geometry softened by Jekyll’s masterful planting. The Dutch Garden adds a final flourish with its symmetry and bright seasonal colour.
