The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is one of Birmingham’s most atmospheric heritage sites, offering a perfectly preserved snapshot of the city’s famed jewellery industry. Housed in the former Smith & Pepper factory, it remains exactly as the owners left it when they closed the doors in 1981—tools on benches, half‑finished pieces on worktops, and order books still open. This untouched environment is one of the museum’s most fascinating features, giving visitors a rare, authentic glimpse into traditional jewellery‑making. Inside, guided tours lead through the original workshop, where jewellers once crafted gold bangles, lockets and rings using hand tools and small gas torches. The rhythmic clatter of machinery is recreated, helping visitors understand the skill and precision behind Birmingham’s reputation as the “City of a Thousand Trades.” The factory’s stamp room, with its racks of dies and patterns, shows how designs were produced before digital technology. The museum also includes galleries exploring the wider history of the Jewellery Quarter, from Victorian workshops to modern studios. Exhibits feature exquisite pieces made in Birmingham, alongside stories of the craftspeople who shaped the industry. Personal items, photographs and trade catalogues add depth to the narrative.
Birmingham United Kingdom
You will find it at 75 - 80 Vyse Street, Hockley, Birmingham, West Midlands B18 6HA. It is inside a preserved jewellery factory, the old Smith & Pepper works, so it looks just like it did when the jewellers left and locked up for the day. It is only about a fifteen minute walk from the city centre, very easy to reach from St Paul's Square. What is lovely about this spot is that the whole area around it is an attraction. You are surrounded by hundreds of little jewellery shops, old workshops and pubs. Just around the corner is St Paul's Square, probably the prettiest Georgian square in Birmingham, great for a coffee. If you want more museums, you are in the perfect place to keep going. The Pen Museum is only a few minutes away on Frederick Street, all about Birmingham's pen trade history. Walk back towards town and you hit the big Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery at Chamberlain Square, and Thinktank Science Museum over at Millennium Point. You also have the Library of Birmingham and Symphony Hall close by in Centenary Square, and if you fancy something grand, Aston Hall, that beautiful Jacobean mansion, is a short drive away.
