Selly Manor Museum

About

Selly Manor Museum in Bournville is a beautifully assembled historic site made up of two rescued timber‑framed houses: Selly Manor and Minworth Greaves. Although the buildings now stand in a planned garden village, their origins stretch back to the 14th and 16th centuries, making the museum one of Birmingham’s most atmospheric heritage attractions. Their survival is largely thanks to George Cadbury, who had them moved and restored to preserve local history. Inside Selly Manor, visitors step into a world of oak beams, uneven floors and richly furnished Tudor rooms. The Great Hall displays long trestle tables, carved chests and domestic objects that reveal how prosperous families lived during the Elizabethan era. The bedchamber, with its imposing four‑poster bed and embroidered textiles, is one of the museum’s most striking spaces, offering a close look at Tudor craftsmanship and decoration. Minworth Greaves, the smaller of the two buildings, is equally fascinating. Its medieval cruck frame and open hall layout show how rural houses were built centuries before modern carpentry techniques. Exhibits highlight everyday life, from cooking tools and pottery to clothing and children’s toys.
