Soho House Museum in Handsworth is one of the West Midlands’ most evocative historic homes, best known as the residence of industrial pioneer Matthew Boulton. From the 1760s to the early 1800s, Boulton transformed the house into a hub of scientific and artistic exchange, hosting meetings of the Lunar Society—an informal group of thinkers that included Erasmus Darwin, James Watt and Josiah Wedgwood. Their discussions helped shape the Industrial Revolution, making Soho House a landmark of innovation. Inside, the museum preserves elegant Georgian interiors that reflect Boulton’s wealth and taste. The Drawing Room, with its refined plasterwork and decorative objects, shows how he entertained influential guests. The Dining Room is particularly interesting: it was here that Lunar Society members gathered during full‑moon evenings, using the extra light to travel safely home. Exhibits explore their experiments, inventions and philosophical debates. Visitors can also see Boulton’s private study, filled with items that reveal his interests in science, metallurgy and design. The house displays fine silverware produced at the nearby Soho Manufactory, illustrating how Boulton blended engineering with artistry.
