Petworth House

About

Petworth House is one of England’s grandest Baroque mansions, famed for its extraordinary art collection and its sweeping deer park designed by Capability Brown. Built in the late 17th century for the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, it later became the home of the Wyndham family, whose patronage shaped the house into a treasure‑filled aristocratic palace. Inside, the State Rooms are the highlight. The Carved Room displays intricate Grinling Gibbons woodcarving—delicate foliage, birds and fruit so lifelike they seem to move in the light. The North Gallery holds one of the finest collections of Turner paintings anywhere, including atmospheric landscapes inspired by the surrounding park. You’ll also find works by Van Dyck, Reynolds and Gainsborough, making Petworth a major centre of British art. The Grand Staircase, Marble Hall and White Library reveal the house’s opulent interiors, while the Servants’ Quarters offer a contrasting look at the working life behind the scenes. Petworth’s vast kitchens, sculleries and pantries show how a household of this scale operated in the 19th century.
