Petworth Cottage Museum offers an intimate window into 19th‑century domestic life, preserved inside a modest worker’s cottage once home to Mary Cummings, a seamstress employed at nearby Petworth House. Unlike grand estates, this museum focuses on the everyday realities of rural servants, making it one of West Sussex’s most quietly compelling heritage sites. Its rooms have been restored to how they would have appeared around 1910, creating a vivid sense of lived‑in authenticity. Inside, visitors can explore the tiny parlour with its polished furniture and treasured ornaments, the narrow staircase leading to simple bedrooms, and the scullery where washing, cooking and mending filled long working days. The sewing room is a highlight: Mary’s tools, patterns and half‑finished garments reveal the skill and precision required of a professional seamstress. Household objects—from enamel jugs to worn boots—tell stories of frugality and craftsmanship. One of the most interesting facts is that the cottage was nearly demolished before local volunteers saved it, recognising its value as a rare example of Petworth’s servant housing. Another intriguing detail is the recreated garden, planted with traditional herbs and vegetables that would have supplemented a modest income.
