Pontefract Museum

About

Pontefract Museum is a small but captivating museum housed in a former Carnegie library, right in the centre of this historic market town. Despite its modest size, it offers a surprisingly rich look at Pontefract’s past, from medieval power struggles to liquorice production. One of its most interesting facts is that Pontefract was once the heart of England’s liquorice industry, and the museum holds rare packaging, tools and memorabilia from the factories that made the famous Pontefract Cakes. Inside, the museum explores the town’s dramatic history through Civil War artefacts, including items linked to the three sieges of Pontefract Castle. Coins minted during the conflict are a highlight, showing how the besieged Royalists asserted authority by producing their own currency. The archaeology displays reveal everyday life in the medieval town, with pottery, metalwork and domestic objects uncovered during local excavations. The museum also features engaging exhibits on local industries, from glassmaking to farming, alongside colourful Victorian toys and household items that paint a picture of Pontefract’s social history. Bright, modern interpretation makes the space welcoming and easy to explore.
