Croome Court

About

Croome Court, set within the sweeping Worcestershire countryside, is one of the most fascinating country houses of the Georgian era. Built for the 6th Earl of Coventry in the mid‑18th century, it became a pioneering collaboration between Lancelot “Capability” Brown and Robert Adam. Brown redesigned the entire estate into a flowing, naturalistic landscape, while Adam crafted interiors that blended classical harmony with delicate ornament. This partnership makes Croome one of the earliest examples of a fully integrated house‑and‑park design. Inside, the restored Saloon is a highlight, showcasing Adam’s mastery of colour, proportion and intricate plasterwork. The Dining Room continues the classical theme with refined motifs and elegant detailing. Croome’s layered history adds further intrigue: after the Coventry family left, the house served as a wartime base linked to RAF Defford, where groundbreaking radar research took place, and later became the headquarters of the Hare Krishna movement. Several rooms reveal ongoing conservation work, offering a rare glimpse into how historic houses are repaired and revived. Exhibits throughout the building explore the estate’s wartime role, the Coventry family’s legacy and the evolution of the landscape.
