About

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is one of the city’s most striking landmarks, a Gothic Revival masterpiece designed by George Gilbert Scott and opened in 1867. Its dramatic architecture sets the tone for a museum that blends art, history and identity, offering a deep look at Dundee’s story across centuries. Inside, visitors can explore eight galleries arranged around themes of environment, industry, people and creativity. The archaeology collection reveals the region’s ancient past, with Pictish stones, medieval finds and early artefacts that trace life along the Tay. Dundee’s industrial heritage is vividly represented through displays on jute, shipbuilding and journalism, showing how the city became a powerhouse of innovation. The art galleries are a highlight, featuring Scottish painting from the 19th century to today, including works by William McTaggart, John Duncan and the Glasgow Boys. Portraits, landscapes and contemporary pieces sit alongside decorative arts and sculpture, creating a rich visual journey.
