Huntingtower Castle

About

Huntingtower Castle, just outside Perth, is one of Scotland’s most unusual and atmospheric medieval residences. Once known as the House of Ruthven, it is famous for its twin tower design: two tall keeps standing only a few metres apart, originally separate buildings later joined by a narrow passage. An interesting fact is that the gap between the towers was once so small that the young daughters of the Ruthven family were said to leap across it for fun. Inside, the castle offers a rich blend of medieval strength and Renaissance elegance. The Eastern Tower contains the celebrated painted chamber, where delicate 16th‑century wall and ceiling decorations survive—floral patterns, symbolic motifs and fragments of colour that give a rare glimpse into noble domestic art. The Western Tower feels more defensive, with thick walls, steep stairs and chambers that evoke its earlier role as a fortified keep. Visitors can explore great halls, bedrooms, kitchens and hidden corners, each revealing layers of adaptation as the castle shifted from fortress to comfortable residence. The rooftop walk provides sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and highlights the castle’s distinctive silhouette.
