Perth Museum

About

Perth Museum, newly revitalised in the former City Hall, is one of Scotland’s most exciting cultural reopenings, bringing together archaeology, natural history and stories of Perthshire’s people. Its most famous treasure is the Stone of Destiny, the ancient coronation stone of Scottish kings, now displayed in a striking purpose‑built gallery. An interesting fact is that this is the first time the stone has been permanently housed outside Edinburgh since its return to Scotland in 1996. Inside, the museum’s galleries explore thousands of years of local heritage. The archaeology collection includes Pictish carvings, Bronze Age tools and medieval finds that trace Perth’s role as an early royal centre. The natural history displays feature birds, mammals and geological specimens from the region’s varied landscapes, offering insight into the ecology of the Highlands and Lowlands. A highlight is the Perth Stories Gallery, which uses objects, photographs and personal accounts to reveal how the city grew through trade, industry and craftsmanship. Items linked to the River Tay, traditional weaving and civic life show how Perth’s identity evolved over centuries.
