National Roman Legion Museum

About

The National Roman Legion Museum in Newport is one of Wales’ most fascinating historical attractions, built on the site of the Roman fortress of Isca Augusta, established nearly 2,000 years ago. This fortress was home to the Second Augustan Legion, one of the elite units of the Roman Army, and remains one of the best-preserved Roman military sites in Britain. Inside the museum, visitors can explore remarkable artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations in and around Caerleon. Highlights include Roman armor, weapons, coins, pottery, jewelry, and everyday household objects that reveal how soldiers and their families lived on the edge of the Roman Empire. Intricately carved stone sculptures and inscriptions provide a glimpse into Roman religion, traditions, and military life. One of the most impressive displays is the recreated Roman barrack room, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the cramped conditions endured by legionaries. Interactive exhibits and detailed models help bring the ancient fortress to life, showing how thousands of troops were housed, trained, and deployed across Roman Britain.
