Augustinermuseum

About

Located in the heart of Freiburg im Breisgau, the Augustinermuseum is one of the most important art museums in southwestern Germany. Housed in a former Augustinian monastery dating back to the Middle Ages, the museum masterfully combines historic architecture with modern exhibition design, creating a unique setting where centuries of art and history come to life. One of the museum’s most fascinating features is its outstanding collection of medieval art from the Upper Rhine region. The former church nave has been transformed into a dramatic gallery where visitors can admire monumental stone sculptures, altarpieces, and original architectural elements rescued from Freiburg Minster and other historic churches. The towering space allows these masterpieces to be displayed in a way that highlights their original scale and craftsmanship. Inside, visitors can explore collections spanning the Middle Ages to the Baroque period and beyond. Highlights include richly carved wooden altars, religious paintings, stained glass, and precious liturgical objects that reveal the artistic and spiritual life of the region over many centuries. The museum also houses works by notable artists connected to Baden and the Upper Rhine.
