Limesmuseum Aalen

About

Located on the site of the former Roman cavalry fortress in Aalen, the Limesmuseum Aalen is one of Germany’s most important Roman museums and the largest museum dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. It stands on the grounds of what was once the largest Roman cavalry fort north of the Alps, making it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in ancient history. Inside, visitors are taken back nearly 2,000 years to the frontier of the Roman Empire. The modern exhibition features more than 1,200 artifacts, offering a detailed look at military and civilian life along the Limes, the vast border system that protected Rome’s northern territories. Exhibits include remarkably preserved weapons, lances, swords, chain mail armor, and military equipment that reveal the strength and organization of the Roman army. The museum also explores everyday life in the Roman provinces. Fine pottery, tools, jewelry, coins, and household items demonstrate how soldiers, traders, and local inhabitants lived and worked. One of the exhibition’s highlights is a unique treasure hoard discovered near the Roman settlement of Buch, containing rare objects that shed light on life along the frontier. Detailed models, illustrations, and interactive displays help bring this ancient world to life.
